Important INFO

Here you can find important information about living in Finland - to the best of my knowledge.
  • "112" is the emergency number to reach all emergency services (police, fire station and paramedics)
    • Be sure to know your location because the central call station may not be near you or know your neighbourhood specifically!
  • Be sure to follow your apartment building's quiet hours that is usually listed in your rental agreement and/or by the front door.
    • Universally in Finland you need to lower your activity volume and music volume by 23:00/11pm.  Otherwise you could get a visit from the police if anyone reports you.
    • 3 Formal complaints and you can be evicted.
  • Smoking indoors is illegal.
  • As of 2020 - you cannot purchase energy drinks unless you are older than 16 years of age.
  • You must be 18 years or older to purchase alcohol - be ready with identification as you may get ID'd.
    • You can only buy alcohol from the Alko or a grocery store between 9AM - 9PM (9:00-21:00)
  • Finland's two native languages are Finnish and Swedish.
  • Finland's currency used is Euros.
  • dd/mm/yy is how the date is written in Finland
  • Finland uses the "military" or 24-hours clock system
  • You do have to pay for paper or plastic bags in Finland when shopping in all grocery stores and majority of shops!  Be sure to help the environment and bring your own if possible.
  • Be sure to lock your bicycles with a good sturdy lock because quite often bikes go missing or are stolen.
  • If you are locked out of your flat - you need to contact the building maintenance company to let you in and if you do not have cash on you - you will be billed.
  • Dogs are to be kept on leash when walking in the city and in the woods.
    • Pick up your dog's poop.
  • Some people walk their cats...so don't freak out if you see a cat being walked.
  • When renting a home - your water bill is usually a flat rate per person and per month.
  • You need housing insurance - to protect the home in case of accidents and also for your belongings should anything more serious happen.
  • You drive on the right side of the road in Finland.
  • You need winter tires from the time of the first snow fall until about April 1st.
  • You should wear a bike helmet when cycling and have appropriate lights and reflectors too - especially when it's dark - but it is not illegal to ride without one.  Your choice.
  • Children start school at the age of 7.
    • Some exceptions like children with special needs may be integrated earlier in what is called "Earlier Education Program" with the hopes the child can graduate the same time as their classmates of the same birth year.
  • Tap to pay - where you can use your bank card or credit card to pay without putting in your PIN code - has a limit now of 50€ whereas before it was 25€ per transaction.
